Written against the NARM Candidate Information Bulletin (June 2025) — the current CIB — containing the CPM NARM Examination Matrix and the Written Test Specifications (rev. 2017), developed from the NARM Job Analysis based on the MANA Core Competencies.
Questions are weighted to the published domain structure rather than distributed evenly, so practice reflects the shape of the real examination.
Scope: NARM assesses competent midwifery practice in out-of-hospital settings — home and birth center. Answers and rationales reflect that scope, including consult and transfer decision points.
A multiparous client births a 9-lb newborn at home. Ten minutes after an intact placenta delivers, she has a sudden gush of blood soaking two pads. The midwife palpates the fundus and finds it soft and above the umbilicus. Vital signs are stable so far. What is the most appropriate FIRST action?
- A. Wait 10 minutes to see whether the bleeding slows on its own
- B. Start external aortic compression
- C. Immediately give methylergonovine IM
- D. Massage the fundus while beginning to empty the bladder ✓
A soft, high, deviated fundus with brisk bleeding points to atony, often worsened by a full bladder. The first step is fundal massage (and emptying the bladder), which is immediate and frequently effective. Uterotonics follow if massage doesn't control it; aortic compression is a later, escalation measure. Waiting risks rapid decompensation.

NARM does not publish the passing cut score. We do not claim to predict pass or fail. Results are reported as percent-correct against a conservative readiness benchmark (75%) for study purposes only. Any resource claiming to predict a NARM result is overstating what is knowable.
